Watts Wins – 1 on 1 National Championship!

This year’s 1 on 1 National Championship took place on Saginaw Bay or it was at least suppose to. With high winds and 5 – 7 waves on the bay the decision was made to hold the anglers to the Saginaw River and make the bay off limits. This would mean that the anglers would need to adjust and change their strategy.

The anglers did just that. They showed why they are some of the best anglers in the mid-west. Nearly 75% of the field weighed in a fish on this blustery day fishing an extremely tough river system. This is a true testament on how good these anglers really are.

Weigh in took place at Linwood Beach Marina & Campgrounds. After the scales closed and a near miss by Herb Seidelman. For the second consecutive year, Don Watts took home the title of 1 on 1 National Champion. Don weighed in a limit coming in at just under 10lbs at 9.96 lbs. This looked to be a lock until Herb stepped to the scales. However, Herb left the winning fish back in the river. Only weighing in 4 fish, Herb just missed winning the Tracker/Mercury package by mere ounces. Weighing in with 9.53 lbs Herb just needed one more fish to knock Don off. Following in third place with a limit was Matt Mosier with 9.31 lbs. Big Bass of the event was a nice smallmouth landed by Herb Seidelman and this fish tipped the scales at 3.18 lbs.

Don’s winning weight came on crankbaits and Poor Boys Baits Darter lures. Fishing along the banks and a rock pile in the river Don caught 6 keepers during the day and secured his second 1 on 1 title.
