Stop Asian Carp

Thank You For Joining The Fight Against Asian Carp

I am writing to give you an update on the fight to protect our Great Lakes from Asian carp. Thanks to your efforts, such as signing the online petition at StopAsianCarp.com, this crisis is starting to receive the attention it deserves in Washington, D.C. Legislation has been introduced by Sen. Stabenow and Rep. Camp, and President Obama has agreed to set up a meeting next week with some Great Lakes governors.

Michigan Takes New Action!

On Thursday, my office is filing a renewed motion to immediately close the locks in Chicago. You may remember that last month the Supreme Court denied our initial request, which was supported by five other states. However, we asked the Court to take another look because it was unaware at the time that eDNA tests showed evidence of Asian carp in Lake Michigan, making the situation more urgent. We also submitted information from a transportation expert that shows the potential costs to the Great Lakes vastly outweigh any potential costs for Chicago that result from closing the locks.

Help Add One More Person To The Fight

Unfortunately, we do not know what the result of this motion or next week's meeting will be. But we do know President Obama and Illinois officials continue to oppose even temporarily closing the locks. That means Asian carp are free to swim into the Great Lakes even as you read this e-mail.

Tell Someone About StopAsianCarp.Com

Please forward this update to at least one more friend to help add to the voices putting pressure on Washington, D.C. to start acting in the interest of the entire Great Lakes region, not just the interests of a single state.

Your actions are making a difference, so thank you!

Sincerely,

Mike Cox
Michigan Attorney General
